Creating a Raid with my externals

Hello all, I have a 500gig lacie big disk and was going to buy a second one. I was wondering what the best set up would be to optimize my drives. i assume a Raid array 0, but I am new to this and would need some advice.

Thank You

Re: Creating a Raid with my externals

Hey Boomerang, a Raid 0 is striping your drives - taking the two drives and "creating" one large one. This has no redundancy; therefore, if something goes wrong, both drives are screwed. A Raid 5 is creating a mirrored drive, or taking the information sent to one drive and duplicating it on the other. So if one drive goes bad, you can recreate the project by rebuilding it off the mirrored drive. Go to your Disk Utility and poke around.

The fastest raid is a raid 0, or striping. This would optimize the speed of using both drives...

But I've never created a firewire array (the big disk is firewire, correct?), but I don't see why the principle would change any.

Thanks Josh, yes it is firewire. I actually just foound out that the G5 is slower than the G4 when you 0 raid a 2 channel FW800 with two externals. So I probably will just daisy chain them togather.

Re: Creating a Raid with my externals

What makes the G5 slower with a firewire raid? The read/write speed, the bus, etc? I'm interested to know more...
