Creating a Panasonic monster...

Okay, so this idea has probably come up a thousand times, and sadly I do not have the resources nor technical abilities to achieve/attempt something like this, but, HYPOTHETICALLY, would it be POSSIBLE to take say a DVX100 or HVX200, remove the lens and replace it with say a Nikon F mount, and reprogram it to flip the image 180 degrees.

I mean it would be a dream machine. Much higher definition picture clarity, much less light lost (than with an adapter). To figure out how the CCD works and recieves the picture from the Leica lenses, and figure out how to go about replacing the whole thing with your own choice of photographic (or cinema) lenses.

COULD this be done, realistically. Because I think it can. I almost want to go so far as to say we should get a small team together to work this idea out and try it.

Thoughts?

Yes it's possible, but not really worth it if you ask me.

There is a site somewhere where someone did something similar with one of those sony HDV cams. Maybe a Z1u?

Also if you're taking off the stock lens and not using any kind of GG there is no reason the image would have to be rotated 180 degrees. The only reason that 35mm lens adapters have to be rotated is because of the extra set of glass since you shooting through the SRL lens, the GG, and the cameras stock lens. If you get rid of the cameras stock lens and the GG then the image would be right side up.

Also another thing to think about is the fact that there will be a difference in size between the camera's sensor and the 35mm frame size. What does that mean? Well without a GG element between them the cameras sensor will only be seeing a portion of the actual 35mm frame, so it will automatically introduce a magnification factor in the 35mm lens.

It all depends on the size difference, but a good example was the original EOS adapter for the XL1s. This adapter had no GG and replaced the cameras stock lens. The image was rightside up, but there was a magnification factor of 1.9x or so. That would make the standard 50mm lens a 95mm lens.

I understand what you're thinking of but its not in the lens that makes the shallow DOF (ie 35 mm adaptors etc) its the smaller 1/3 inch chip. Engineer a camera with larger chips on a smaller frame if possible...
BTW, the Leica lens is far better than any Nikon would be IMO....

Nikon used to make lenses for broadcast cameras and I had one on my Betacam SP 507, it was a piece of JUNK! Thankfully we bought an extra wide angle for company use and I scarfed it up and used it and hid the Nikon...

Also you wouldnt need to flip the image upside down. The HVXs own lens will project the image upside downn, and the CCDs are mounted upside down so the image is displayed the right way up. When using an adapter, you really need to program it to show the image ride side up, than upside down
