Creating a novel for merchandise based on the story of the movie.

Someone suggested I commission a writer to create a novel/ebook for use as merchandise for our feature film that has just wrapped principle photography.

I like the idea of having transmedia material to market to an audience after they have viewed the film. Has anyone had success with this idea.

Our film is a family adventure film called 'Lost Wilderness' . If we did create a book or books they would probably be aimed at pre-teen or teens and explore some of future or pre - adventures that our characters in the film are engaged in.

If your film is family-oriented, then yeah, it's possible. I know the Christian market just eats this stuff up, as long as you have something that appeals to their theological beliefs. But even if your film is secular, but family-oriented, you might be able to target the younger audience by marketing to the older (i.e., market to grandmothers/mothers looking for birthday/holiday gifts for their young loved ones, and if they've seen the movie and the kids have seen the movie, then the book will be a meaningful gift). Outside of the family market, though, this is a really hard push. Hell, even in the family market, it's going to be an uphill battle. Make it easier on yourself by giving your book a unique hook, or a different angle on the subject matter than is seen in the film. If it's just a novelization, it's not going to go anywhere unless your film is the next Star Wars.
