Creating a false wall

How does one do it?

I'm taking on a pub by the end of January, and I would love to kick one door in - and create a 'O' movement throughout the pub. But it would require a private doorway going into the kitchen. So essentially I need to build a false wall corner section, with a doorway.

Myself being quite a nut head, I have no clue how to do this. Done my research on the internet, with all these figures and numbers. Yet a lack of images, diagrams and videos.

Wondering if anyone in the industry here has ever had to blow up or put up a false wall - and would be able to provide links to place I could get a 'Dummies 101' walk through?

Aside from building a fake wall, and hanging a door in it, the real challenge is to secure the "flat" to something. When the actor kicks it, any movement on the part of the door frame will ruin the shot.

Back in the pre-SARS/low dollar boom times of the Toronto film industry I had a chance to be a part of a similar shot in a diner. We built a dozen doors that fit into an existing frame on location, and proceeded kick at them all day.

The trick is to not use the location's strike plate, as it will not withstand the punishment and eventually tear out. Instead we used different ways of holding the door fast so it appeared to be locked, depending on which side of the entrance the camera was.

Store bought doors could do the trick, but you still have to hang them.

My suggestion is to rope in some theatre/film students or other keen people who have experience building for film and have access to a workshop. Most would be eager to do this shot as it is wicked fun to do, especially when it finally works.

Lastly, the most potent way to sell this shot is sound design, the finer points of which I know very little.

Too bad you're across the pond, otherwise I'd help you!
Good luck,
Craig
