creating a fake depth of field in post

I've seen some pretty sweet wedding videos out there @ http://www.stillmotion.ca/site.html

and wonder how in the hell do they have the time to set focus when doing a shoot like a wedding where everything is pretty much run and gun. Is there a way to do this in post? it'd sure make capturing these images a helluva lot easier if' i'm not constantly pulling focus when I'm doing an event shoot such as this.

I don't believe StillMotion actually uses 35mm adapter all the time. Most of the shot you see with the adapter on are glamour shots of the bride doing makeup and the couples posings and things like that which there are plenty of time to set up the camera since everything is orchestrated. For the live ceremoney it is either naked camera or ultra wide angle lenses which essentially eliminates the need to change focus anyway.

It is *possible* to fake DOF in post, but it's extremely tedious and it will never look as good. You can't create the same bokeh with just a blur filter (i.e specular highlight).

I wonder how stillmotion do their tracking shots and also the "gliding" shots around the ceremony? It's very well done!

several cameras on steady cams, cranes and jibs. It can be done. Also the DOF can be shallow if you are using a 1/2" or larger chip cam like the EX1/3.

Forget about the chip. The highend cameras have a back focus that will allow for more depth of field control.
