creating a crowd

Hey, I need to add a crowd in the background of a scene of mine. I have about 5 people who are sitting in chairs and "acting as a crowd" and i want to turn it into 50 people filling all the chairs.
 
There is a tutorial on this on creativecow.com, look for the one that shows a computer generated concert. It's a really cool tutorial showing how they used a greenscreen to create a concert in a huge, non-existant concert hall.
 
Something like this takes a great deal of planning and very careful execution, especially concerning the lighting.
 
Given the careful lighting and the other tutorial, the only practical brief explanation i can give you is to have layers. The same 5 people. Sitting in different seats in batches of shots. Then you stitch all the shots together. Or all of them sitting against a green screen and acting ou their parts. Then you key out the green and shrink the layers in size and put them into various locations such as balconies, vip stands etc. More like photoshop cut n paste.
