creating a big mpeg2 file in compressor

I made a movie in final cut pro. It is 57 minutes long and I need to make a dvd
so I used compressor to do it and started rendering last night at arounf 9:00 pm
by the time I got back from work 5:00 pm the next day it was 50% done.
I stopped the render because I needed my computer for another project.I have a powerbook 867mghrz with a gig of ram. Now I know this is a huge
file and what did render played out through Quicktime so it worked. The question is
does it normally take this long to create a mpeg2 from final cut ?

What version of final cut / compressor are you using, and what render settings?

Something strange happened in Compressor 2 that makes certain renders (usually 2-pass vbr) not only take an extremely long time, but end up taklng up more space than anticipated. Your render time sounds a little long...?

If you're using a system like this, for what it's worth, you're better off exporting a quicktime movie (NOT necessarily self-contained) and using compressor, rather than exporting from FCP using compressor. That way, you can do other things if necessary whil;e the render continues in the background.

BTW, is it possible your movie needed a lot of rendering in FCP, in addition to the MPEG compression? If that's the case, the time might be reasonable...

This project had a lot of render time in FCP I used a lot of dirrerent source material
uncompressed files in after effects ,not very long files but close to two gigs each. I used two of these and also shots from the dvx100b abd web stuff so maybe it makes sense it took so long. I like your idea of using compressor out of quicktime. So, I would make a quictime from fcp and then import the quicktime into compressor right?

Your processor is pretty slow. It's the same speed as my iMac. I switched to the Powerbook G4 with the 1.67 GHz to speed things up. Yeah, on your powerbook it could take a LONG time especially if you are doing a 2 pass with a high bit rate,
