hey im not sure if this should be put in fcp or after effects but my question is that i have some POV shots on my dirtbike and i want to drive down the road and pass font. So basically i want to create a 3d font on the road so i can pass it. I have seen it done before i just have no idea how it is done. thanks guys

A fully 3D text or just text that appears in 3D space?

To create actual 3D text objects, you need either dedicated 3D modeling/animation software, or a plugin like Zaxwerks for AE. I only have minimal experience with Zaxwerks, so I still prefer a 3D application. It gives you more control as well.

There are some ways to fake 3D text in AE, but it won't look as good as what you'd get from software like Maya, Cinema 4D, etc.

Also, from the sounds of what you want to do, you will also need a 3D tracker.

just something that i can do in AE. i have cs4. i dont mind if it doesnt look that great, i just want something where i can stick the text maybe 50 feet in front and then it stays there so it looks like i pass it on the road

Well without any plugins, you're pretty much going to be stuck with flat 2D images. But you will be able to position them in 3D space. However, there is a workaround where you basically duplicate your text layer multiple times, and move each layer a little bit backwards in the z-space. Then pre-comp all of the text layers and animate it in a new comp. All of those layers will slow down your machine a bit, so I would turn all of those duplicate layers off until you're ready to render.

As for positioning it in your footage, your best bet is a 3D tracker. I believe CS4 comes with Mocha. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Depending on how complicated your scene is, you could always just try to matchmove it manually.
