Create a hud?

Ok I need to create hud, that would be inside of a battle helment. Something similar to what FPS games have. Now I dont want like the ammo stuff but stuff like vitals and things. It needs to look something like this...

And I need a few animations to make it look like its booting up, now I can do the creative cow TV turning on and off animation unless you guys can suggest something better but i need things like the different little stats and info blinking on... and mabey the radar thing from games. But the final shot should be, we start from black and then we hear a whirring noise and then we see the display starting from a central point of light expand to the full size of the screen. Various stats and titles blink on grudgingly as we hear a beep sound for each as they turn on.

So first of all can this be done in after effects well and, if so what do I need to do. Because ive looked for tutorials on the individual effects but cant seem to find any good ones.

Nerdy I know. And no it is not acctually a halo fan movie or anything, since halo 3 stuffs everywhere i just decided to use it as the example.

Yes. That's what it's for :)

I would say sketch out what you want to see onto some paper, then make it in AE. If you can do the tutorials, you should have a fair idea of how to create graphics, no?

Create a new solid, draw a mask, adjust the opacity, add a distort filter, and make it look like the halo 3 frame.

For the counters and other items, create them in Illustrator or photoshop and add them to your comp.

Actually, you could create most of it in those two programs, since they are static graphics. Some might blink, but that's easy enough to do.

I would create as many elements as I could in Photoshop, and then animate them in AE, setting all layers to Screen.

Most of the pic posted of the helmet view are lines with a slight gradient falloff away from the lines.

You could, for instance, create a square with lines and info on it in Photoshop with a blank background, use Any of AE's Sphere "mapping" plugins wrap it around, and then you can rotate, and even better Animate the rotation.

And you can pull of quite a bit using Masks to reveal portions of your Photoshop work, and can either use the Wiggler to randomly animate, or do a sort of frame by frame in a very basic sense to manually move the mask to revel portions as you want them.

First you have to know how to use photoshop to create your graphics with layers to animate, like stated.

Then go to Video Co-Pilot and watch the Basic Training. That should get you enough training to find your way around.

For a video looking effect check out the "Bad TV" and "Night Vision" preset effects under animation presets. With a little adjusting you'll be able to get some rad looking stuff.

I made a Reality TV pilot about Paintball and we had helmit cams, they looked so 1st person shooter that I made some crappy HUDS super quick. You can laugh at them here.

Good luck.
