Crazy Synch issues, FCP and MXF files

So, I'm helping out a buddy. He shot some stuff on the HVX, and it isn't synching to second system sound. I look at it and some of it's too fast and some too slow.

Somehow his setting's got messed with and he shot slow-mo on some. Then he had a "firestore issue." and the raw mxf files would not import from the firestore, Compressor however recognized the files so he used it to create DVCPRO HD 720p 29.97 files. The firestore seemed to only record 6 minutes at a shot. So he had to keep turning the camera back on.

I sped these 6, 6 minute pieces up by 156% and then slid them along the timeline. Laboriously looking for synch points. It works in the timeline. Export is a different matter. Each section begins at the correct spot in the timeline, but the clip starts at the wrong point and ends at the wrong point.

We are about to print to tape and re-import, but would love a solution that doesn't include tape or purchasing something. And a technical perspective on why FCP is grabbing the wrong spot when making new QT files.

Thanks for reading the nightmare.

What kind of export presents the problem you describe? To compressor? To quicktime conversion? What about creating an FCP quicktime movie, recompressing all frames? Printing to tape sound like a bad option, since you will not be exporting HD quality from your HD source material...

I have no idea why that happened, but hopefully we can help you export it to something workable.

I've had some simular audio syncing issues lately exporting Quicktime movies. This problem became existant when i started working in HD.

Yes, exactly.

Please describe your export presets and maybe we can commisertate, better yet, come up with a solution.

What are friends for?

What are friends for?

The effed up files where converted from MXF using compressor, and given a setting for 30 frames progressive.

Subsequently we have successfully used, a P2 LogPro Demo to convert one of the corrupted files from the firestore, and it came out as 59.97 And it played fast like the uncorrupted files that had been shot to the P2 cards.

Obviously the correct thing would have been to buy that software re-convert all the files, and re-do the painfull synching work. Alternately just exporting the files and re-synching with the hope that creating the new files would iron out the difference in timecode that was making these things create new out of synch files.

We tried every variation of export to make this timeline an in synch quicktime.

I just remebered when I've seen this problem manifest itself before. A show I picked up had some weak assisting done and they had captured some of the tapes twice. In some of the cases capturing some black after the tape had run. Inadvertently when copying the show to a new drive, the wrong tape 06 was chosen. It played in synch in the timeline, but would be out of synch when making a new file.

Btw capturing some of the tapes twice wasn't the biggest part of the mess of that one.
