Crappy Blur

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
This is what i get when iadd a blur to my footage, and after an exportation:

Why so bad?

Because its 8bit 4:1:1 DV footage... there just isn't enough information in there to give you a clean gradient without banding like that.

add some noise/film grain to it, and that will kill the quantizing (solarizing look)

in the quest for no noise in images, you're touching the edges of what 8-bit footage can display in areas like shallow grads. There just aren't enough colours in 8-bit to describe an image like that smoothly.
This is where 10-bit, 16-bit, float and RAW come in to describe colour in greater numbers, and hence smoother colour with no quantizing.

No, it looks horrid on a TV. I am using agaussian blur. And it looks fine at first, then when i edit for to my project, and i test the whole thing, i get that crappy blur.

Thanks
