Back in the day I used to shoot on 16 mm film, and I used to be a film snob. Yes, I admit it. Nothing was good enough if it wasn't shot on film.
But I went to see Crank 2, just to check out the cinematography, and I absolutely loved the look.
I forget which exact cameras were used, but they work great. They used the fast shutter speed to get the 300/ Private Ryan sort of look and lots of right in the middle of the action shots for a great frantic effect, that doesn't get on your nerves like Cloverfield. Jason Statham looks positively apoplectic in quite a few shots.
The cast was awesome. Great performances by Dwight Yoakum, a cameo by David Carradine, and OMG! Amy Smart. You need to see this film just for her stripper scene.
The high def shots in slow mo, Wow! I could see every pore on the actor, and loved it.
The story telling was over the top, and I mean way, way over. The action was great, but then just when you couldn't stand it any more, they'd cut to some unreal scene and you would go, WTF?! did they really put this in the movie? Before you could get over teh shock, it was right back into the action.
Great movie, and lots of fun. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely loved it; the acting, the storytelling, the cinematography, and the use of inexpensive video cameras to shoot the whole thing.
