Crane Tripod

Hi all, I rigged myself up a 12 foot DIY camera crane, but I'm at a loss of what to use for a tripod to support the weight. The camera is just a Canon hv20, so there's not a ton of weight being hauled around. However, I don't trust my normal tripod to this thing. I have heard of people using speaker tripods, is that a good idea?

I got a big heavy-duty Manfrotto tripod off ebay for mine. I was a little worried about the weight, but I put all my weight on it (150lbs) and bounced around and it didn't budge. Kessler crane sells one that is very beefy, and meant for lots of weight. If you get the type with 3 tubes on each leg and a speader bar down below, they will hold a lot of weight.

I wouldn't reccommend speaker tripods unless you modify it with bracing, because the legs don't attach to the top, where you need the most stabilization and strength.

Definitely something you don't want to fool around with, as serious injuries could result.

Hmhmh..

Do you think speaker's tripod won't do the job for light-weight crane for HV20??

I am just in process of building one..

I will let you know, how it works

We just tried the speaker tripod as a crane support and it turned out great; with no problem..

Pics will follow soon..
