So, what do you guys think is the best way of getting gigs? Shooters, editors, other crew, etc...

How long should the cover email be? Should you attach a PDF or copypaste your resume on the email? Should you not include a resume at all but link a resume on your site?

I'm worried about keeping my previous producers' privacy. Is it okay to say "contact me for references"? If so, is it okay to just give them emails with no phone numbers?

Absolutely it's okay.
I don't think I've ever given out references contact information without being asked for it - and generally I've cleared it with the references in question first.

Mandy is usually where you'll find better jobs, but Craigslist is more targeted to your area. Of course, you have to wade through all those "Great resume building" jobs, where they expect you to bring your own equipment and work all day for nothing. And have years of experience too!

CL is great if you're patient. For every 100 jobs that are posted on there, I'd say there are no more than 4 that are actually worth pursuing. There are some great opportunities on there if you watch it like a hawk, though.

regarding cover letters, i post crew listing every year for our productions and request a personalized cover letter stating why you want to be a part of this production specifically. to me, the cover letter is very important. i toss any applicant that doesn't attach a cover letter withou looking. as well as the "generic" cover letters that don't address the specifics of our productions (which run a little differently). it is, in my opinion, part of the interview process and if it goes ignored or taken lightly, that speaks volumes to me.

i received over 200 responses to this years posting for 5 or 6 positions. of those, i'm looking at four. four. granted, i can basically garrantee that these four are going to be serious-minded, professional collaborators.

You're absolutely right - you have to watch it like a hawk.

For those of you on Macs, if you don't have it already, you might want to check out this Widget

That's what I use to keep an eye on craigslist.
Pretty handy, as I can just bring up the dashboard and see the latest postings.

(though to be honest, I haven't answered a craigslist ad in over a year - I keep an eye on it out of habit now)
