Coverting 4:3 to 16:9 in FCP6

OK, so i should mention that i was a Sony Vegas user and have just switched to FCP.

I figured a good way to learn FCP was to capture and edit an old short film i shot.

I shot it in 4:3 and i want to convert it to 16:9 but FCP keeps squashing the whole image into the 16:9 frame.

In vegas i could just crop the 4:3 frame to a 16:9 or 2.35:1 ratio and it automatically fit it in the 16:9 frame without distorting the video. This also meant i could reframe shots by sliding the video up or down within the frame.

How can i acheive this in FCP?

Cheers :)

great easy to understand video

for how well FCP 6 deals w/ so many formats, I really wish you didn't have to do the motion tab for multiple aspect ratios. I would really like to see a nice GUI for pan/tilt-a-scan pop up automatically in FCP (maybe in the next FCP release)
