Covert to 1080 24p or 720 30p??

I have two types of footage from a shoot I have to put together into one project. I have AVI files that are 1080 24p and MOV files that are 720 30p.

My question is which do I convert to for the video to play smoothly. I've had issues converting 30p to 24p but maybe I'm doing it wrong. And will the different file types I.e.MOV versus AVI affect the final outcome? This will be for web use only so it doesn't need to be perfect, just smooth playback and the best quality I can get. Any opinions on which way to go with this?

thanks in advance!

Here's how I would handle the situation

*Make the project at 1920x1080 @ 30P
*In the NLE tell the 720P footage to upscale to 1080P. Framerate doesn't need to change
*In the NLE tell the 1080P footage not to frame blend, You'll get a pseudo 3:2 pulldown cadence with your 24P footage. (It should go A, B, B, C, D as your cadence when rendered out)

Pay attention to how the upscale looks. Most NLE's do bilnear scaling and it will look overly blurry. If this is a high paying project look into hiring a compressionist to handle the cross conversions for maximum quality. Good luck.

Thanks! I'll give that a go. It's for a non profit so pay is a luxury. I'm using CS4 and I'm considering converting everything with cuneiform before I edit. Anyone have an opinion on that before I use that? I've had pretty good results with cuneiform in the past. Thanks again!

Cineform has a good conversion tool, but CS4 has will have low quality scaling. As long as your two clips and output are all in the same color space, you shouldn't have any issues with that.

Good luck.
