Couple of Question's

Just wondering if there's any friendlies out there this Crappy Saturday morn.

I'm due to finalise casting later this January, and start filming on the third week of February. It's an Online Comedy/Romance/Drama series set & filmed in the Welsh Valley's, UK.

However, just wondering about a couple of thing's to be honest:-

1/ Music
If I legally wanted to include a song (e.g- Rule the World, Take that) in the series, Is there actually a legal way to go about it. Her I can turn on the local, television station's. There's a couple of thing's that only get's a few thousand view's - but they use world known song's.

I'm just wondering how they go about it, if there's a scheme or what price's vary to license song's etc - As you can tell, flying blind, no idea whatsoever.

2/ Finding a Key Location
A lot of the scene's take place within one of the family's main household's. However finding a good place to film is proving hard. I hear what some people do is find a great looking street for there production, create letter's, and post them through the door's. Then they wait for response's.

But the reality is this isn't something that's funded or got much power behind it. I can't pay someone for coming in for a week to film in there house. So Is there any pointer's anybody has got?

Obviously the local film commision's etc are a great help sometime's, but they don't have everything your looking for sometime's - this is such an occasion.

Any friendly rant's / advice would be appreciated.

Key Location:

haha, you asked for it, in a friendly way.

I don't know how you can expect to go into someone's house and film and not offer anything in return. Unless they are freinds or friends of friends or your a smooth-smoothy-talker, I don't know, I get tired of it.

Maybe if your cast and exposure is up there, ya know. But generally, if you can't afford to shoot it, re-write it to work around what you can get your hands on or find the budget for it.

Music:

Same deal. Contact the band and shoot the shi*. Usually it's out of thier hands and you have to deal with the copyright holders, probably the studio, which will screw you out of luck. But you never know, the guys may like your work and cough up a trashed track or something, right?

TV and Radio stations pay an annual BMI/ASCAP license fee which covers them for copyrighted material. If you want to use copyrighted material (technically, all material is copyrighted, even public domain stuff unless you perform it yourself, but then you have the copyright), just ask permission. You may actually get it for free, all they can say is no.

best bet is to find an indie band that wants the credit and will do their music for that.
