How's this tripod?

What's a good studio lighting kit? Could it double for Digital Video use, too? Or are lighting for film and lighting for portraits entirely different beasts?

That is a solid tripod for photo work... a bit on the heavy side if you do a lot of outdoors stuff

I prefer to use flash units (SB800s in the Nikon line) for my studio uses although I have on occasion used some of my film lights.

Technically you can use any lights so that ultimately comes down to your budget...
