Couple Capture Questions PLEASE Help

Ok So I have a small problem, I am importing some video for a guy he says he shot it at 24p yet when we captured on his cpu FCP3 the footage looked very jerky, I know the sequence was set at 24fps and the captured quicktimes said 24p but on the playback it looked jerky....So I took the footage to my house and I am putting it into FCP4.5 at 24fps (or should I do 23.98) but anyway it does not look jerky....So the question I have is can I take those files and import them into FCP3 or is it too much of a hassle, and do you think it will still look jerky on his playback....Once again it looks fine on my cpu....Yet he is editing at his station....He says it was a DVX100 not an A, yet I am using a 100A to import, could that be a problem....Please help....PLEASE

Was it shot 24p or 24pa?
Are you doing an advanced pulldwn removal on your machine or using Cinema Tools to reverse telecine or just placing clips in a 24fps timeline? (should be 23.98 timeline)
Are you viewing on computer monitor or output through firewire to a real monitor or TV?

I'm not sure how much FCP 3 supports 24fps in any form since it's been awhile. When playing back 24fps timeline FCP will add telecine pulldown to make it run at 29.97 but if your computer isn't fast enough it will be jerky. Likewise 24pa can have a slight stutter when viewed normally (before pulldown removal)

Don't forget that 24fps requires slower panning motion to look smooth and to avoid strobing.

DVX100 or DVX100A doesn't make any difference with this issue.

Best thing to do is a test of the worst shot. Convert it for him (since he doesn't have pulldown removal on FCP 3) and export it as 23.98 QuickTime. Have him import that into a 23.98 timeline if he can.
Check the results.

It was 24p so in that case I dont have to do a pulldown removal correct....It would be so much easier if he would just convert to 4.5....But any way if it was shot on a 100 not a 100a in F5 can I not just capture at regular 29 and edit that way or is that a problem as well...Thanks for the help

Re: Couple Capture Questions PLEASE Help

Last and Final Qestion I am editing on 4.5 I should be able to take him the quicktime files right out of the Capture folder on my hard drive or do I have to compress them again to take them to FCP3....Thank you all for your help

Re: Couple Capture Questions PLEASE Help

if it's 24p and you're going to leave it in a 29.97 timeline (which is fine) then he should be able to do the exact same thing with FCP. No need for 24 timeline or special pulldown removal.
And yes, you could just take the captured media to him.
make sure he has his settings to put up an alert if it drops frames on playback. That may be the problem you're seeing.
