Could they or we be wrong????

Its funny, in the latest issue of Camcorder & Computer video magazine, boldly on the cover was "XL2 vs DVX100a face off : No holds barred fight till the death winner take all!" or something dramatic like that.

I had to look.....

Either they had an extreme canon bias, or canon may have sent the editing staff of the magazine on a nice trip to some carribean island for a few weeks, to "test" their new camera.

The reason i say this is that they basically refuted every claim our guys came up with in the side by side tests. They claimed the XL2 had greater Dynamic range, better audio processing, better controls, and was more light sensitive. I thought the DVX won all of thoes in the side by side comparison? I dunno maybe canon came out with a souped up version, to kill off the DVX????

also they seemed more interested in things like being able to change 24P -> 30P -> 60i without having to move your eye from the eye cup. They said the XL2 "won" in this case. but i mean, isnt that what the scene files are for? or can you change on the fly while recording on an Xl2?

i dunno, they seemed almost misinformed, or they didint understand how teh DVX or the Xl2 settings work. For example, the dynamic range claim. I wonder if they had Cinegamma turned on or were running standard gamma Vs the Xl2 ? and the audio claim, Althoug hthe XL2 has 4 audio channels, i thought the proccesing chip on the DVX was the best around... its almost like they were impressed by quantity over quality. Deeper zoom = better lense kind of mentality.

I dunno. I actually kinda wonder if our Side by side was heavily biased. or was it theirs?????

I read that review and while the reviewer wasn't terrible, he clearly didn't know the ins and outs of the two cameras. He lost a lot of credibility with the lower light claims for the XL2, but let's face it--Camcorder is a consumer mag and they're going to have a different perspective on things.

i had both.

DVX
User friendly
easier to handle
Smaller
Cheaper (everything)
the original 24p perfected anything after imitation
buy and recieve needed parts when needed.(dont get part that do nothin but cost alot..)

Canon
Large
Heavy
to many lenses (yes this is good but i think they are getting nuts)
expsenive everthing. i saw a lense for a grand. (the dvx Anamorphic adaptor is 800 or so but thats a strecth)
Can't really shoot handle very well. you better have strength.
washed out colors.

in my opinion both are great but the dvx is a greater thing.

It's also very based in opinion. I like larger, heavier cameras...so I put that in the "pro" side for the XL2 when comparing them. Also, when you add the anamorphic lens to the DVX, the price gets a lot closer to the XL2 which shoots native 16:9.

Not arguing for one or the other, just saying that they're close enough that pure opinion is ultimately the deciding factor in one or the other. Thus, it's not unheard of for either one to be picked as king. (in my opinion of course)

I agree, a reviewer could reasonably come up with either cam as having an edge, but this reviewer just wasn't that familiar with the cams. The whole ridiculous point of declaring a "winner" is more of an editorial directive to sell magazines. Obviously, both cameras have their strong points and the suitability depends on the application.

well my written states is netiher pro or con just a what they are. simplfied. i like heavy film cameras like 35mm and 16 mm cameras. as for a video camera it better have 35mm adaptor
