I was about to order "the 5 c's of cinematography" on amazon and i decided to try and look for a book on editing as well. But i came up with a ton of results none of which seemed to stand out as a well reviewed book. Can anyone recommend one to me?

Its all about Murch...

If you're looking for a 'learn to edit' kind of book, then the aforementioned "In a Blink of an Eye" by Walter Murch is your go to guide. You could go a little more old school with Edward Dymtryk's book on editing. Its much older, but I think plenty of the fundamentals would still apply. Personally I'd lean towards Murch though.

Additionally I would recommend Linda Seger's "Making a Good Script Great" and Steven D Katz's "Shot by Shot." While one is a book on script writing and the other on directing, both can serve as solid resources. Seger's book is great about fundamentals of structure and character development. Katz's book I like just as another view to look at. As at the end of the day you are there to be an extension of the director and assemble his/her vision.

Oh and if you just want to read about editing experiences and the like, then there is:

The Conversations by Michael Ondaatje
Behind the Seen by Charles Koppleman
First Cut by Gabriella Oldham

If you need more of a technical guide for your software, what software are you using? If you are using Mac and Final Cut Pro, then go with the "Apple Pro Training Series" lines of books. There is a standard book and advanced book for FCP. Also there is a book on optimizing your FCP system (which I've seen a lot of growing reviews for).

I'm looking for a book on theory more than how to use my software. I feel i have a good handle on how to use my tools. Now i just want to know when to use my tools, what makes a good edit, etc. I'll be giving Murchs' book a look, much thanks!
