Corrupt files???

OK I have a somewhat freaky situation going on here. I'll start with how I captured the material. On annitial acquisition I used dvrack to capture dvcpro50 avi files. The avi capture was actually an accident (mac user). Regardless after the shoot I was able to dump the footage onto my mac and import the avi files into my FCP project. Literally no problems for months, until today. I opened my project and all of the clips that were the avi files were green?? I could hear audio but no video is showing up. When trying to render the messege "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corrsponding hardware card." pops up. So I went to the source files on my media drive and tried to play them back in quicktime, VLC, Windows Media Player etc... and they won't play back correctly...the picture is gone, although I can hear audio. Somehow the files got corrupted. As I said before I have had these files on my HD for months and they have played back just fine. Does anyone know what to do. I'm sweating here:(

Had you ever played the files back in WMP before? Strange that they won't play back in on Windows if they are AVI... How long ago did you shoot this material?

It's been probably 6 months. And I have been in and out of this project for that period of time with no problems.

Have you updated any software recently?

the only thing I can think of is I recently had a project that required some third party software to play back FLV flies. I ended up downloading several programs before I found the right one to play it back. that's about it. I am always reluctant to update nowadays. When things are runnin' smooth I tend to milk it for a while.

Does DVRack play back media files? If so, can you play them back using DV Rack? The codec would have to work with the software that created the files.

The only thing I can think of is if you brought them into FCP and it asked you to conform the files so that they work in Final Cut. This could be destructive to the original media, but since you didn't mention it I am assuming that this was not part of your workflow.

When I first read your post I thought it was a Quicktime 7.4 problem, so I started to ask if you had upgraded that recently, but it sounds like no. also, not being able to play back in Windows Media Player makes it sound more severe. Are you using WMP in a Mac environment or Windows? If Mac, do you have access to a Windows machine where you can try it?

Which versions of Quicktime and FCP are you running?

Actually yes I did bring the files into final cut and it simply told me that there could be some compatibility problems...but I haven't had any for the last six months. Somwhere along the way recently something got messed up. I did play it back on a pc using WMP and no luck. It states that it has a missing or undetermined codec?? I know it's something with the codec (dv50) so how do I get it back to normal?

Just to be clear - you have been running the same versions of FCP and Quicktime for the last 6 months? Absolutely no software updates?

It sounds to me like updating Quicktime and FCP might actually solve this problem if it is a codec compatibility problem, BUT this could cause other problems - especially the Quicktime update, as other users have noted here.

I am no expert - I recommend a second or third opinion on this one.
