Correcting for Projection

Hi All, first off, sorry if this is in the wrong forum - I am working in Final Cut and I saw other Color questions here...
I am excited to have completed my first documentary but am paranoid about how it will look once projected. This has been done all by myself (no budget) so it has been through the help and support of forums like this and lots of trail and error that I have been able to get this project this far.
Our first showing was on a lame projector from a rental company with lots of ambient light, so it was really dark. The second was on a high quality projector and it looked great. But in going to other screenings, I see that some people are having issues where their films look too dark.
I realize that there are a number of variables involved - projector type, ambient light, even the screen itself. My film looks great on my consumer HD TV, in Color and on my consumer monitors - but I wanted input from you all about your experience in taking your projects to festivals on either DVD or Blu Ray
I was thinking of creating specific burns for the festivals that in Compressor, I would bump the gamma up a couple points to off set the loss of brightness I have heard you experience during a projection. In Color , I made sure that the clips are all well exposed with good contrast. But again, being a newbie to festivals - I am paranoid.
Any help our advice you have would be really helpful. Thank you so much...

All you can do is do your best to make it look good on properly calibrated monitors. Beyond that, you have no control. If it looks crappy, that is on the FESTIVAL people, not you. There is no way to know before hand WHAT the projector will do to the image, and how to correct for that. Just give them the best you can, and hope it works out. If not, complain to the festival that their stuff sucks and is junk, and how dare they call themselves a festival if they can't project properly.
