Correct color on a cheap monitor....

I bought a cheap monitor for my 5d just cause I'm not sure how much I'll actually use it. However it's pretty accurate compared to what I see on my computer, more accurate then my 5d shows. Now it doesn't have any color bars or histograms or anything. I was going to load a 1080 color bar JPG on my CF card, pull that up on my 5d and then use that image to adjust the monitor's brightness/color. Is there any reason color or luminance/gamma won't be accurate?

Yeah. They're only going to be as good as you are at eyeballing it and then only as good as what you're eyeballing it against. Might be ok to shoot with, might burn you on some shots.
How accurate is your computer monitor? Has that been properly calibrated recently? How accurate is your 5D display? Without at least one part of this chain being calibrated and proven accurate you're just going to be guessing at how close one thing is to another thing that might not be accurate at all to begin with. Or it might not even be the same color space you're comparing to.

Any cheap, off-brand monitor I would not expect to have correct colours. It is a combination of cheap panels and poor hardware.

i would only ever trust monitors from Sony, Panasonic, TVLogic, Flanders Scientific, Leader and Astro off the top of my head.

FWIW, I prefer a cheap monitor with a calibrator over an expensive monitor and no calibrator. Plus my old and cheap Spyder2express has serviced lots of monitors by now.

A cheap & poor monitor will never be very accurate. You can tune it as best you can to the color bars but those are only very generalized bias controls. Proper calibrating of a monitor is a lot more detailed than Contrast, Brightness, Hue and Saturation. What do you do if say, there is some green bias in the mid tones and a touch of magenta in your highlights? Good luck with that.

Cheap is as cheap does. People think they can take a Yugo, tune the engine and outdrive a Porshe. There are some fundamental differences.
