Corpse Bride

I dunno what everyone else thinks about this,

I love Burton's work, but this just wasn't that great. It 100% should have been a short film, there is not enough story in the film to sustain it's (short) running length...

probably would have worked much better as short film before Charlie n the Chocolate Factory...

there just isn't any character development at all.. and the animation really lacks any motion blurring to give it a little more fluidity (maybe that was on purpose I am not sure)

I agree on the lack of character development and I think it ultimately sinks the film. The only character that comes close to being more than one-dimensional is the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). When your central character isn't particularly interesting, you've got big problems. I think the animation work is meant to be like those bad pixilated Christmas specials, so it's ok for what it is. However, I'm now officially completely sick of Danny Elfman--his music is really getting on my nerves. I'd put this on par with The Nightmare Before Christmas--tolerable, but not memorable.

Yeah, I also agree with both of you. Except I believe Danny is a great composer, but his stuff sound too much alike..

I am growing to really respect Elfman's body of work; always a huge Oingo Boingo fan. At one time I too thought his scores were nothing but the same thing over and over; Pee Wee, NIghtmare, Beetlejuice......................

but after Spider Man, Red Dragon, Proof of Life, Sleepy Hollow. The Frighteners and A Simple Plan I have changed my mind. He's not my favorite composer (Give me Williams or Zimmer) but I'd be stoked to have him score my film.

I really like Elfman's earlier stuff--it's literally almost magical, but I think he hit a low with Corpse Bride. The score and songs are alternately shrill and non-descript. When he started film composing he brought something really unique and fresh to scoring, but I think he's been cut off from pop music so long that his new scores just feed on his old stuff instead of bringing in fresh styles, themes, and ideas.

But on the other hand, if you wanted a new Boingo album, you could buy the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" soundtrack.
