Corpse Bride workflow

Pretty cool interview with the guy behind Burton's new flick. It was shot entirely with Canon digital SLR's (EOS 1D Mark II), and edited in Final Cut Pro.

"The FCP project is 80 minutes long at 720 x 480 (offline) and 23.98 fps (for easier NTSC pull-down). Every shot is a folder of images, and each clip is treated as a reel. The EDL is eventually exported in CMX format for 2K conform on Quantel IQ, then output to film on Arri Laser."

****! And I thought I was going to be the first!

This is cool. I haven't read the original Russian tale, but we have a fairy-tale in Czechlands that sounds very much like the 'Corpse Bride' on the surface. I based my zombie entry based on it (very loosely) - it's called 'The Dark Princess'. Sound like 'Corpse Bride' is something I am going to see in a theatre.

Yeah it's crazy to read about some bigtime production using the techniques you've been using for years only to look like they invented it. I just wrapped a show package for espn using stop motion shot on canon slr's about a month ago. Crazy.

I filmed a quarter of my short film "Awake" using stop motion with canon digital SLR's as well. What gives mr. burton is stealing our thunder :).

Let's sue him for something. All I want in return is a set of armatures from Nightmare Before Christmas... oh, and ps: full access to Danny Elfman for my scoring needs when ever I want.

I want to experiment with my 10D (when it arrives) with some stop motion and time lapse. I have this vision for a shot driving through downtown portland that is sort of half time lapse half stop motion. I'll do some experimentation, and then sue tim burton

I didn't read whole thing but are they having to do 24 exposures? Or can one take one Digital shot and dupe it 23 more times?

well, they have to take 24 shots no matter what, otherwise movements would get strung out longer and things would look funny....sort of as if it was shot at a high frame rate. I think this would be the case anyways.....

Or better asked KAI....

Could one attempt a similar scheme at home using a digital camera? Could I take one picture, move, another picture, move until my little dude walked across the room and then in POST dupe each picture taken 23 times?

Or better yet, just stretch that picture to take up 24 frames in a second?

I ask as in speeding up the process. Instead of going, click, click, click, clikc, click, clkick 24 times...................

I also understand mimicking motion blur as ILM did with thier models (Blurring frames every so often)

Yes, that's essentially what they did in Corpse Bride. It was all "filmed" with a Canon digital still camera (EOS 1D Mark II). You move the characters a bit, take a shot, move again, take a shot, etc. So yes, you can do the same thing at home, then just import the frames into your NLE as a sequence and treat it like any other clip.

No, then you wouldn't perceive any real motion, it would just look like second long stuttering. You might be able to make out that the character is supposed to be moving, but it won't look "real". It IS possible to shoot double frames (ie: one pose that lasts for 2 frames, instead of 24 discreet frames). This doesn't look fake to the eye. It makes it quite a bit simpler and saves time too.

Damn TC; you must have been bored with that post. Your self-moderation is appreciated.

"Question was already answered" Who you talking to?

Secondly; thanks KAI and David. (I was at work when I was attempting to read the article; actually working)

Just don't ban Terry. We need more cowbell. The day Terry changes his avatar feel free to commence with the banning.
