Corporate lighting - 2 setups

Hi Everyone

I'm planning to shoot a corporate with 2 different setups in a factory with overhead fluorescent's.
(with HVX-200 - 72024PN mode)

1) Rows of benches with product on them in a factory using a dolly and want to make it look good. The factory has fluorescent overheads and large windows with natural light facing the camera. What would any of you suggest for lighting.

2) Interview with a bank of monitors behind subject with natural light from window to subjects left
Overhead fluorescent's.
Thanks in advance

Hi Triton5,
If you want things to match and look good, you need to either change the flouro bulbs to kinos, gel the flouros to match daylight or gel your daylight to match the flouros. The cheapest option is to find out what the color temperature of the flouros are AND how much of a green/magenta shift they have. Then, gel accordingly.

1) I would suggest you kill the daylight, gel your product lights to match the flouros and white/black balance the camera accordingly. If that poses a problem, kill the floros and bounce daylight balanced light around the factory. If you only have access to tungsten, try gelling the windows with CTO (but this gets expensive).

2) I would suggest you kill the flouros, diffuse the window and use its light to supplement your key light (which should be daylight balanced as well). You will also need to have enough light to adjust your shutter speed to match the refresh rate of the monitors. Probably between 1/60 and 1/75 if in NTSC land. Hopefully your camera can do fine tune adjustments using shutter angle instead of corse shutter speed adjustments.

Ultimately, if this is for anything but a high end broadcast commercial, then you are not going to create a poor product if you just get the colors relatively close. I find 1/2 CTB on a tungsten provides a nice warm light when mixing with daylight and rarely try to match things exactly.

Yeah, does it really have to be daytime? It would be great to just throw up a large 20x solid or 12x solid over the windows and black them out entirely. Leaving you to just your overheads and your lights. What lights do you have? Can you rent?

The easiest way to go would be getting some kinos. Then see if they have spare tubes laying around and stick those in your kino flos, that way you have a consistent color temperature across the board. Otherwise just bring lots of green, magenta, cto and ctb and find the correct gel pack to match your overheads. If you could get your hands on a color temperature meter, I'd try that.

If it has to be daytime, kill the overheads and try a few shiny boards outside shooting through frames of opal or 251. Then from there maybe kinos or gelled tungsten lights to match.
