Corporate Event Lighting Help

I used to work sound and projectors at corporate conferences, and I have endless camera hours, but I've never lit a conference room. The guy who's hiring me wants to do it on a budget.

There's going to be a speaker at a podium and a mic in the center aisle for Q&A. This will be a decent sized event, 300 people or so, and he'd like occasional crowd shots.

Afterwards, there will be a smaller Q&A "roundtable" with about 30 people.

I have a basic Lowell kit (softbox, omni, tota, little keylight), and he's said that he'd rent two Arri 650's if we need them.

I have never lit anything that wasn't either in a small room, or documentary-style shooting on the fly with whatever was around.

Anyone have any tips for lighting corporate events with this gear? Do I need more?

Re: Corporate Event Lighting Help

It seems that this will take pace in a large room with a fairly high ceiling. Unfortunatley the lights you have mentioned are rather a small voltage to be used at any distance. And if you just put them on stands the crowd will not be happy. You could rent a couple of parcans (more of a stage light, not too expensive,)cross key, and diffuse them . Another option is that if the ceiling is lower you can bounce the light off of that to bring up ambiant levels, or even mount lights on said ceiling. Many conference places have mounts set up for lighting, and they may be able to help you out.

i did a meeting like that and used 4 650s, two on the crowd and 2 bounced on the speakers and backdrop. Watch out for people mindlessly touching the lights and burning themselves. It happened at least 15 times that night. Had to put chairs around the stands and a paper saying "do not touch, will delete your identity."

Source 4 1000w elipsoidal. Lots of throw from a long way back. Highly controllable. Call a local theatrical rental house, they'll have them. They only rent for like $15/day. Most will come with a pipe hanger. If you want to put it on a stand, get an adapter from the rental house. Also, sometimes the plugs are not household edison type and you'll need an adapter for that also. No big deal, you just need to be prepared...
