I have a corporate client who has a global world presence. They now invision that they can do an internal "magazine" type show for their INTRAnet soliciting clips from their sales & research people worldwide.

They envision everyone just shooting clips with own camcorders. Tomorrow I am supposed to go and review this 'idea' with them. Obviously, non-professionals shooting 'home' video will be a total disaster (bad camera audio, shooting out windows, no tripod, etc)-- thats a given.

Then theirs NTSC, PAL & SECAM...

Then someone will email us webvideo thats 160x120 or someother resolution that they think we can make work.

Other than the obvious Mrs. Lincoln... how was the play? No seriously, has anyone else worked thru a similar experience? What have you come to overcome this?

I suggested putting together a 'shooting' FAQ (which I realize most wont read). Then sending a NTSC Camcorder (with tape) to offices around the world with a universal power adapter to charge the batteries. Then if they wanted to go ahead with this screwy idea at least it would be in a format we can easily deal with.

Yeah, I would convince them to buy the same camera for all of the offices that are going to be involved with this.

Can you provide any more details on the type of shooting they'd be doing? Is it straight-to-camera
"reports" of how sales are in Mogodishu for example? Or is it a lot of in-the-field shooting?

If the former, Skype may be your answer. It's decent quality for intranet distribution, it's universal
and since people just use a web cam, it's pretty easy to manage quality. You just record the
Skype presentations, edit them with some top/tail graphics and music, and post them on the intranet.

If the later, rather than a text FAQ, I would produce a step-by-step video, posted on the intranet,
telling them exactly what you need. I would stick with a format like MiniDV and get them to drop it
in the mail. You can then convert it here (PAL, SECAM, etc). Trying to have them capture/encode
and email it to you would be a nightmare.

It's a challenge either way to be sure, but doable. Ultimately it comes down to their budget. If they
have the money, people can be trained. My wife is a corporate trainer for a company with offices
around the world. Regardless of whether your in Mumbai or Madrid, everything has to be consistent.
That just takes time and training.

I hope you find this helpful. I would be interested in knowing how your meeting goes!
