Copywritten music in festivals

Years ago, I threw some of my video productions together with popular music in the background. I was just going to display them on my site and let it go. Now that I'm starting to get good reviews for my work, I've been prodded into sumbitting my combined 70 minute feature production to film festivals. However, the music is now hanging me up. Close to half is either buyout or my own. The other half is copywritten. If I simply drop the copywritten segments, it lowers the runtime to about 35 minutes and tosses me into the category of film shorts along with all the kids cellphone shorts.

How demanding are these festivals?
What are my options?

You already know the answer to this. Find something else. On top of that, if your film contains 35 minutes of commercial music that contributes to the story so little that you can cut it and make a short... well, you should probably cut it and make a short.

Copyrighted. As in a legal right, not as in a pen that you write with. Also, I agree, get permission or lose the music.
