Hi,

The UK is bound by the same laws and treaties as the US. Your DVD is just like any other work, you have to tote the freight for copyrighted material like anyone else and pay the licensing and fees.

You need to get permissions and pay royalties or get buy music or graphics.

Laws vary from country to country so you'll need to speak with someone knowlegeable in UK law to be sure. An appointment with an attorney specializing in copyright would be a very good idea.

As to your specific question, my educated guess is you can't use it. In general, the "fair use" exemption for "educational use" use applies to classroom instruction in a regular school environment. A university teacher can legally copy an article from a science journal to hand out to his students, for example. But a "How To" DVD would be a far cry from that and my guess, based on North American experience, would be that you'll need formal permission from the copyright owners for ANY copyrighted material you use in it.

You can use any images/material you own rights to. It's as easy as creating and copyrighting what you wanna shoot.
