I'm in the process of directing my 1st short film that I also wrote. I am getting worried about a few things concerning legalities; for example, one of my characters mentions a particular brand of beer, is that allowed? And a character mentions a website url address, is that allowed/

Just things like that, is this something I need to be concerned with? This film will be in the festival circuit when it's done.
 
But what if, and I emphasize IF, some offers to purchase it; Would I then run into some trouble. I just wanna make sure I do things the right way so I don't give myself bad habits in the future...
 
Unless there is an absolute need to, I'd recommend avoiding specific mention of a brand name, especially in dialog... if the brand name is on something in the background, maybe... but probably not even then...

At one time there was the concept that if a reference was so fleeting, so, un-emphasized, etc. that it was not the concern of the court... but that concept seems to have vanished... and depending on the whims
of the tradmark/copyright holder, you could be liable at least to defend in court.

Fests, being rather sensitive to this, may reject a submission based on their fear of being named in a suit...
