Copyright forms...confused....

Re: Copyright forms...confused....

On the 7up can it would be wise to contact Pepsi.  They may pay you to put in there.  That would be a benefit for you more so then them, because it would be an advertising cost.

Re: Copyright forms...confused....

Thanks for the info,
Is there any kind of a home movie exception?
Like if I were to Film a wedding, add a bunch of Yani music, and send a few free copies to the family members would that be breaking any laws?

I have been making these low budget comedy movie parodies for years, and every time someone watches them they all want copies, And I am never sure I should give them one because they are full of copyrighted stuff, music, film clips etc.(and also because its a pain to set up 2 VCRs find tapes make covers and so on).

Re: Copyright forms...confused....

Or an attorney. There are probably attorneys who specialize in this area.

Re: Copyright forms...confused....

Some things you can get away with through the Parody Act. This is how Weird Al stays in business. Generally people are flattered when he makes a parody of their stuff and feel they've finally "made it" when he makes fun of it. However, they aren't allowed to sue him for making it. Coolio ran into this. Weird Al asked permission to make a parody of Gansta's paradise and asked someone in Coolio's staff about it. They said they spoke with Coolio and that it was okay for them to make the parody. Al made Amish Paradise and then Coolio tried to sue him for it. The Parody Act came up and he lost the case against Al.

Not sure the exact laws surrounding the Parody Act, but it protects comedians who use copyrighted material as part of their act. SNL is protected by this and several other things as well.

Re: Copyright forms...confused....

Well, that's not quite right.  There's a parody exception, and it's Al's bread and butter, but it's not an Act . . . there are judicially-defined guidelines for determining if something is a fair parody.

(And Al always asks for permission first; there was some confusion as to Coolio. He apologized.)
