Copyright for filmed event

This is a question for my friend who is a DJ. He is going to be DJ n an event that will be filmed for a TV show airing on the Versus channel. So he was wondering about copyright infringement while he is DJ, is this an issue he should be concerned about?

Thanks

*ps I think this the proper forum for this post. Plz move if needed.

Copyright infringment of WHAT exactly? The channel will require the program producer to have clearances for everything protected by copyright that is contained in the production. If your friend is asking about the music he is DJ'ing, he may be asked for a play-list of his sources so that they can be incorporated into the cue sheet of music to be cleared (licensed) for the production. If he is asking about his own performance on-camera, he will likely be required to sign a release form granting the producer rights to his performance, etc.

The proper forum for copyright, license and clearance questions is more likely the "Business and Post Production" forum.

That basically sums it up. the WHAT is... He was asked to DJ the event, provide background music, be the go to audio guy all that jazz. He was told the whole event is going to be filmed (its a street bike stunt show) and just wanted to know if he needed to change up his music to Create common or something when they would be rolling. But it looks like its more on the producer than him? Or can they tell him X amount of songs he is allowed to play?

Thanks for your time

I would bet my next paycheck that your friend is using unlicensed music right now. Is he currently paying public performance license fees to ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, et.al. when he goes out DJ'ing?

And if the producer isn't smart enough to start thinking right now about what music is being used, then your friend's DJ music may end up on the cutting room floor. The producer may be forced to substitute something that he can license.

Well i guess you prob just won big $$ then lol. I'm not 100% sure on his part, but looks like you know where this is headed. Thanks for leading me to the answer!
