Copying DVD to AVI or MPEG

The Green One

So I have this short that I DP'd on. The director never gave me the DV tape he promised but I eventually got a DVD copy from another cast member. I would really like to get the movie into an AVI or similar file so I can put it on my website and into my reel. Unfortunately of all the programs I have (Premiere, QT7, Nero, WinDVD, and some other cheesy converters), none seem to do this. I've downloaded some trial versions that seem to work but don't do the full job. I don't really want to go out and pay a bunch of money either for a program I'll use one time for a 6 minute short.

Does anyone know of a good freeware or 100% demo that will do this? Any other tricks to achieve this? Anyone willing to trade for some QT7 compression??

Sometimes I make demo reels for my actors and they usually give me DVDs from other projects to add into the mix. There ARE ways to rip the data and convert it, but I usually just end up recording from a DVD player to the DVX and capturing it from there.

XMPEG is freeware/opensource that is often used for this purpose. There are other more complex methods that produce higher quality, but that one is pretty easy to get working usually. The thing to watch out for that most of this type of software is designed to rip to DIVX, some to MPEG2, and not many to DV-AVI. In all seriousness, it's not that bad of an idea to dub to tape with the DVX (or use passthrough through the DVX straight into your computer). The advantage of this is you end up with AVI that can be more easily edited into your other demo reel footage.
