Coollights LED

Need to use a flag to cut light if you are worried about a light pattern from the LEDs. The softbox seems like a must have.

What do you mean by the "light pattern?" Could you explain or post a photo?

Yes, the gels are great and easy to use.

When closing the barn doors, the light getting blocked creates a slight set of vertical lines, not a perfectly smooth transition from light to darkness. This, from what I hear, is common for led lights (i.e. multiply small light sources). If it is critical, then you need to flag the light. Only used them for one shoot and this was my experience. Don't think this is specific to Cool lights, just larger fixtures using LED lights.

Haven't started editing the project yet, but don't think I have any pics of that specifically, but can post some set-up pics a little later.

You only really see that effect with items up close to the LEDs like the barndoors for instance. As you get further away from the fixture the effect lessens until its more like a normal hard light. As John said, its specific to all LED fixtures that use multiple LEDs to make enough light to do any good. Even the litepanels 1x1 will have the same issue.

Her are two pics from the shoot using one LED 600 and one LED 256 (daylight balanced flood on the 600). No color correction, exported from the QT clip as JPEG and reduced in size 50% in Photoshop with very high compression (I think).

We had one LED 600 to camera left (their right) and one LED 256 off their left shoulder with a little spill on them and mainly filling in the background wall. Large window to their left. I think we had the diffuser gel in the main light. This was for a conference and we needed to catch some people coming and going to ask a few questions. Nothing fancy for sure as we are in the hallway, but worked well with the Cool Lights (shot w/Canon 5D Mark 2, 24-105 lens).

Just want to add that I'm another happy LED 600 owner. Richard, please add me to your notification list. I definitely need the new gel pack, maybe the softbox, and perhaps another unit! Keep me in the loop!

Just got my LED600, 256, and Softbox! in the mail today. And wow, am I impressed. I'll try and post some stills from the shoot I'm doing this Friday if I get a chance.

Thanks Coollights.

Also keep me in touch with any future developments, as I'm an instant fan of your current products.

Thanks everyone for your comments and thanks to John for the stills. artforme was absolutely the first customer for the new softbox. He needed it now so bad, he got the direct shipping from China along with his two LED fixtures as well. Congratulations on that!

Just a word on U.S. stock for the LED 600 and 256. The products will arrive around the 20th to 26th time frame. I updated the site to October 26th and hopefully that will be the final word on that but its not in my control at this point though. We still have stock in China though for those in Europe, Australia, Asia, etc. So you can send in your orders by email to info@coollights.biz to get those fulfilled quickly.

Will the gel kits and softboxes also be available on the 26th as well? I'd like to order everthing at one time if I can.

Thanks for the quick reply Richard. Just curious -- what type of fabric did you wind up using for the diffusion on the softbox? Nylon, fiberglass, etc? I plan to buy a couple and a gel kit as well.

I would highly recommend the softbox if you use the LED 600. Once figuring it out, you can get it set up in under a minute.

I keep mine folded in half because I don't need it in the smallest position for storing. Even with it folded in half it's ultra portable, and it is a great price for what you are getting. I'm fully satisfied. :) Plus it comes with an egg crate with multiple sized carrying cases, and everything is so light and easy to store, with a durable quality. Great design.

Its about equivalent to a 2x55w or just a bit stronger but definitely comes in well under a 4x55w. I usually compare it to a 650w fresnel though.

Thanks for your comments. I think its a great complement to the LED 600 too. But, it can be very challenging to figure out how to re-fold it back to its smallest size. That's why we included the 2nd carrying case so you can carry it around in its "2nd stage" form as I call it. Otherwise, if you know how to fold up a 42" reflector disc, you can probably figure this out with no problem.

So for interview-like situations. Thanks a lot. Are there any plans to create bigger lights with LEDs from your side?
