Coolights LED256 - DEMO

I recently bought a Cool Lights LED256 and did a short demo. Hope everyone likes it! Clip was done with a DVX100a.

I didn't use any gain on the camera settings for the demo. The placement of the light was about 6 or 7 feet from the subject (me) and about 3 feet to my side (due to space limitations in my house). If I could have placed it a little farther to the side it would have worked a little better I think and I would not have been looking almost directly at the light which is actually pretty powerful.

Also, I was not using any fill or a reflector of any kind which actually would have helped, but wanted everyone to see just the light from the 256LED and nothing else.

Power was from a Bescor battery and not the supplied AC power supply or Sony L-Series battery.

I personally like the unit and can see a lot of uses for it. The fact that it is so compact and has a low power drain makes it handy for use almost anywhere. I also have the 600LED and this unit makes a nice addition to my lighting kit.

Would appreciate any comments from other users who have one of these.

Thanks for that tutorial. Nice job and nice lights!

Nice job on both, the LED600 and LED256 review.

I have one LED600 flood and two LED256 lights, and mainly use them for talking head interviews.
I find that a pair of LED256's with Sony NP batteries work well for field interviews, with using ambient light and one LED256 for fill and the other LED256 for background hair light if needed.

The LED600 would work great in the field, but I currently don't have the AB mount on it, so it's either AC power or large Bescor DC battery belt, that I don;t want to lug with me.

Down the road I am going to pickup another LED600, but the spot version, as the flood with the softbox isn't quite strong enough for me as a key light, (I still use Rifa55 for this with reflector for fill). So anyone out there who might want to use the LED600 for a key with softbox should look into a spot version of the light.

But I have to agree, that the build quality of the lights are great, and the output from the lights are phenomenal for filed use.

BTW, I am also using the LED256 for wedding reception usage, as supplemental spot sources for the dance floor. Works great for quick added light, when the need arises. I know that these weren't designed with this use in mind, but I used to use on camera NRG Varalux lights (on opposite ends of the dance floor) for added light and image depth, in low light venues. And I find that the LED256 works even better than my 100w lights for this purpose.

Topcat, thanks for the demo!

I thought you mentioned difusion was coming up in a test, did I miss it?

Chip, it was there alright. The last segment of the series shows "1 LED Bank with diffusion" as in the caption. It was using the filter that came with the filter pack included with the light.

I did not show any of the light with the white felt over top of that filter. The setup using a piece of white felt over the filter cuts the light a good bit more, but also softens it a good amount as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the good comments.

You didn't mentioned this in the video but I was wondering if the gel pack for the 256 is also a slide in filter like those on the 600.

I don't have the filter packs with my 600's because mine are the earlier versions which did not include the filter pack --

but yes, the filters included with the 256 do slide in behind the barn doors.

The answer is yes.
The filters are the same for both LED600 and LED256 (1/4 minus gree, 1/2 minus green, 3200k tungsten, diffuser).
Of course the filters for the LED256 being smaller to fit the light.
