Some cool new mic tech on the market in case you missed it, including not only lower cost 1st order ambisonic mics (from Rode $1000, Zoom $350), there's also a very reasonably priced 3rd order ambisonic mic (Zylia $1200/$700). It captures over USB (integrated ADCs), so no need to worry about dealing with 16 analog mic cables! (laptop required for recording is the tradeoff). Higher order ambisonics (HOA) provide better spatialization/localization than first order (4 mics/channels). Zylia makes a great case for use beyond VR/AR: you can record with just one mic and do isolated mixing of targeted sources in post. 4 mic/channel ambisonics can do this as well, only the results won't be as focussed (will be "blurrier"). Another interesting aspect of these mics is the ability to zero in the virtual mic soundfield to provide cleaner recordering with less room reverberation/ambience if desired. It would also be possible to set up multiple virtual mics and mix them together to precisely control subject/room tone balance. As they say in the example video, it's not intended to replace a bunch of high quality mics per subject, it's marketed as a 'demo' tool to quickly capture the subject without the complexity or cost of setting up many mics+cables, then allow for reasonable mix control in post. The reviewer stated that while not as good as multiple direct mic recording, it's actually better than demo quality. In any case, it's impressive there's already a 3rd order ambisonic mic on the market and it's priced less than the 1st order Ambeo (which I paid $1600 for when it launched (now $1300)).

Note the Focal monitors in the background- if you're looking for high-end monitors, Focals are pretty awesome (learned about them at CanJam a couple years ago (bought some of their headphones)).
While not really 3D/ambisonic (they state 3D processing from 2 channels), also super cool using multiple capsules to allow a variety of mic emulations in post, including changing the proximity effect and room tone/reverberation in post(!), ~$1500:
