Cool looking lights on Movie set

So today I stumbled onto a film set in downtown Philadelphia this morning. They are shooting a movie called "Law Abiding Citizen" starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler. Anyway they had 3 of these very bright lights attached to a crane you see construction workers using. I was talking to the Lighting guy and grip and he was telling me that each one of the lights is putting out 18,000 watts!!! They had a total of 6 of them blasting through some silk diffusion. At first I thought they were Litepanels 1x1's because the front of them look square, but quickly realized they were HMI's because of the amount of heat those lights were putting out. The HMI's are called Singles and are from a company called LRX Lighting.

In the event you need a lot of light for your production, you should check these out! They have their rental rates listed on their webpage as well. I am sure you would need some serious generator power to run them too!

That is pretty cool. I've never seen one of those before.

I wish I'd seen that! I'd like to see how they rigged the lights and diffusion to the condor. Did they have the diffusion on another condor?

Anyway, that would take 180amps paperweight, 150 amps actual draw.

With 6 of them that would require a MINIMUM of 900amps. I'd say that's a good amount of juice. Definitely had either a large generator they simply tied into the cities power grid with a very large breakout.

I was just at a lighting seminar for Birns and Sawyer, where one of the head guys over there told a story about when he was starting off in the industry.

He told of a story where some mobster types in hollywood, had rented a big genny to be delivered to a night club. There was not a film shoot there, but instead the owner of the night club was having a dispute with the power company, who had in turn shut off his power. They were using those large film generators to power the building. lol.

Shows how powerful these can be!
