There are new stands now so this post is about the old ones that Cool Lights no longer carries.
I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but I did a couple searches and didn't find anything.
I don't recommend buying the light stands from Cool Lights.
I got three stands with my original order, and 2 of them shipped broken. The part that you tighten into is plastic and it had broken off. This makes the stand unable to stand, so it is useless. The third broke while I was putting a light on it to test it out.
I notified Richard, who immediately shipped me three new stands (thanks), and told me that they don't need to be tightened very much to stand strong. This tip helped me for a little bit, but even not tightening very far, one of the stands got a crack in the plastic part.
On my first shoot with the stands, I warned everybody on the crew that the stands would break if they tightened too hard, and even then two of them broke. Now I just have one working stand, but I don't use it anymore because I know it'll break if I do.
Richard was very helpful with the problem, but the stands just don't work well enough for anything more than delicate use.
I recommend going with all-metal baby stands, and I'll probably do that in the future.
