Cool iPhone thing from Fostex

Location Sound had a booth next to us at Cinegear, and they were showing a cool new thing from Fostex. I don't know the price, and I don't know the availability. Heck, I don't know if it's any good or not, but it seemed interesting to me, and I don't even have an iPhone. Here's the link:

It's not something that I would use for anything professional, but if it's cheap enough, it would be a cool little toy to have.

Hmm, effectively turns the iPhone (or IPod touch?) into a digital field recorder. As you say, if it's cheap enough then it could be useful.

There is already a pretty good field recorder/app available through Blue.
A "Blue Mikey 2.0" and their software turns the iPod Touch into a decent stereo recorder.
There is also a four-track podacst program (Monle), and another 8-trcak program (the name of which slips me right now).

There are some incredible sound/music apps available for iPod Touch/iPhone if you are into that sort of thing...

Personally, I much prefer having dedicated gear. While it can be fun having gadgets like that, even if it was pro quality (which is unlikely) I wouldn't want to deal with a phone call coming in on my recorder during a show and vibrating the mics.

And unless I'm mistaken, the iPhone and iPad are limited to 44.1k/16-bit audio through USB interfaces.

Alesis has had a similar product as well. Girlfriend got me one for Xmas and I couldn't bare return it and hurt her feelings so I kept it , it actually not bad , just built cheaply.
also has XLRs and phantom.

Yeah. I can't see using the Fostex thing for anything other than home movies or trade show interviews (we did a bunch at NAB and Cinegear and some of the people were using iPhones as the camera). I wouldn't count on it for anything professional.

I don't know about the Fostex thing for sure, but most apps and many accessory appliances that work with the iPhone or iPad work automatically with iPod Touch 3rd Gen or higher.

And again, it depends on what you mean by "professional." You probably won't be using one of these things for your next faeture film (not a major, anyway).

On the other hand, I recorded a live band with it that sounded fine, no problem for YouTube videos or probably for sfx recording in the field, or for sampling for music production (when you are doing a production that needs a gritty-sounding sample that sounds like a sample, like a loop or something, rather than a "real" sample like a piano).

Fun stuff to have on hand wherever you go too...
