Converting video files to mpeg format

can anyone recommend the best way to convert video files to mpeg format for ipod use?

i googled some freeware and have tried three different softwares and each had an issue with it whether the audio not synch with the video, vice versa, or either it just didnt work.

i prefer to do this while at work on my PC if possible but i do have mac at home with final cut studio and whatever else comes standard on the mac, etc. maybe i already have something that will do it you think???

Total Video Converter on the PC is great. I use it for iPod video, converting YouTube videos, and converting some of my own stuff to various formats.

It's cheap and very easy to use, but it also has a lot of settings to tweak if you need to.

Quickltime pro will convert to a QT file which should play on your iPod (I thought so at least)

On second thought I have had a conversion going for 5 hours and it's not even 50% complete so I would throw my idea right out the window because it sucks.
