Converting to a DVCPROHD QuickTime file

I have never had to output a Quicktime File before. Does anyone know how to produce a file with the DVCPROHD codec in a .mov file from EDIUS 4?

I want to keep the DVCPROHD quality, not converting to a web broadcast quality, per this post, e.g.

you are hoserated - you can't convert directly, because there IS NO DVCPRO HD QuickTime codec available on Windows - my advice would be to transcode to something uncompressed like AJA or Blackmagic codecs (free downloads) or Sheer ($150/seat to write, free reader) to get it to a Mac, then use Compressor to flip to DVCRPO HD at the right size.

Don't have that much free disc space? Try PhotoJPEG as an intermediate codec - it is cross platform.

Anybody got a better answer?

You could output to an AVI file using the DVCProHD codec. The Mac should ingest that and rewrap it in a QuickTime container.

Of course, all of this assumes that you are in fact moving the material to a Mac for further processing. If you are doing this just to avoid a loss of quality, stop, because you can edit DVCProHD natively with Edius in either AVI, MXF, or QuickTime containers.

On a final note, the post you referenced for creating a high-quality QuickTime file is more or less obsolete. If I were you, I'd create a H.264 file as per these instructions.

Thanks guys. That would explain it. I guess I need a Mac.

For now I'll just work out another delivery medium with the client (he requested QT).

I think outputting a dvcpro hd avi is probably your best bet.

Or, you can follow Thoff's great little tutorial on outputting h.264 .mov's in EDIUS. That is probably going to be a lengthy render though.

EDIUS will also let you write a p2 file back to the card. You might try that. Then you can just dump to an external HDD, or whatever. He can have what would be mxf files that final cut is going to re-wrap anyways. I don't know how well it will or won't work. Just an idea. I don't have any experience with the workflow you are trying to do, so... Just some ideas.

Just test out all your options. Find the one that works best for you, and for your client.

Thanks! Actually, that is what we ended up with. We were doing that previously, and it turns out that was plenty good!

Wonderful community, y'all.

Cool. Glad you got a solution. The other day I was looking at the output options in quicktime pro (if you have that) via quicktime export file in EDIUS. You choose quicktime movie, then go to settings. I noticed there was a dvcpro option, or two. Didn't try them or anything. Just happened to see them. Don't know if there is dvcprohd mov's or not. Anyways, something you might check out for the future.

Jason,

maybe i can put another question, related to Edius and quicktime:
I am trying to get the efforts of H2.64 compression from Edius, recalling that some people mentioned that there is some trouble, i couldnt really succeed...i am running Edius 4.1 and have installed the latest free-quicktime setup for Pc.

Do i need to buy quicktime pro to encode H2.64 or is there another way to do so...?!?
Thanks a lot..yes, great community..curious how the lock-down of the canopus-forum will change the situation here..!
