Converting Normal(4:3) to 16:9

Good afternoon,

I made the mistake of shooting an interview in Normal mode (4:3) when my other footage is in Squeeze mode. Now I will have to mix the footage. Can I convert the Normal to 16:9?

Is it simply a matter of adding the letterbox in post?

Cheers,
John

Austin,

Thanks. I failed to mention that I'm using Final Cut Pro 5.0. Perhaps there's a similar method here.

Cheers,

John

Are you working in a 16x9 sequence or a letterboxed 4x3 sequence? If you are working in a letterboxed sequence all you have to do is mask off the top and bottom of the 4x3 footage to get it to match. If you are working in a 16x9 sequence it's not as simple. You can either pillar box the 4x3 (black bars on the sides) or you can scale up the 4x3 footage until it fills up the 16x9 frame (unfortunately this will kill your image quality).

adkimery,

Thanks for the reply. I'm working in a 16:9 sequence but have only logged a very small portion of the footage. I'm just at the very beginning of the project, so it wouldn't be a train wreck if I had to switch to a 4:3 sequence to preserve the image quality. In this case, what would I do with the Squeeze footage I shot to bring it to 4:3?

Cheers,
John

i would import the video at 4:3 and then run it through Compressor. Under turn "Frame Controls" on and have it crop the video to 16:9. Use the DV NTSC preset (or whatever codec you want to edit with) and export. Bring the new file into FCP, make sure "Anamorphic" is checked, and then it'll match up with the rest of your footage.

yah, i made the same mistake with the last music video i did. i just made just that 'anamorphic' was checked off next to the footage (for both the 4:3 footage and the 16:9 footage) and my sequence had anamorphic checked as well. your 4:3 stuff will be squished down obviously, but hopefully it won't be too noticeable.
