CONVERTING MPEGs to AVI

I wasn't sure where to put this...

Is there a software that can convert my wedding videos from MPEG format to AVI? Like an idiot (wedding video noob is more like it) I only kept copies of the final wedding DVD in MPEG format. Now, I don't have an AVI version to bring the entire project back into Premiere, should I want to cut together a little demo reel.

Any gurus out there know of a software that can help? I just downloaded Total Video Converter the other day. I have a feeling this could help but when I see the completed conversion, it looks fine in my folder but PRO 1.5 keeps complaining about an unrecognizable compression codec, and wont allow me to import.

So, if anyone knows of the proper Total Video Converter settings or if they know a better program to do this, I'd totally appreciate it.

Thanks all!

Rick

You could try winAVI video converter. Free download, converts damn near anything.

you guys rock. thanks. I will try them both first come first serve. hopefully winAVI will do the trick...

Just in case neither of these work...im still open for suggestions Dvxuser brethren...

Remember, though, that the quality will not be the same as the original DV.

Yeah, thats my fear. Wasting all this time for a TON of quality loss. Why isn't there just an easy way of converting an MPEG to AVI???

Right now, I am using MPEG STREAMCLIP...its been working on a 4 gig DVD for HOURS. So, I have no idea if its going to work or what it will look like when its done. I will let you all know...

MPEG streamclip is a good one.
I tried this today and successfully converted my MPEG wedding video into a compressed AVI. I have to say, I viewed the AVI with Windows Media Player and it looks pretty impressive despite the compression...so thanks for pointing me in that direction!

One thing though, I cannot get PREMIERE PRO 1.5 to recognize this file. Any ideas? It just wont import it. It doesnt give me any error messages, it will just pop up the "IMPORTING FOOTAGE" box and that box will hang there and nothing happens.

If I right click on the file, and choose OPEN WITH PREMIERE, PREMIERE will open but without any accompanying files. Any ideas would be great! I did post a similar post in the PREMIERE section (sorry for the cross post, but I am dess-purr-ate) but frankly, I don't know if this is a Adobe thing or a MPEG STREAMCLIP workflow problem....

thanks!
Rick
EDIT: Thanks for looking but I got it to work!
