converting mov files to avi

I use a pc and my mate uses apple. It would be useful if we can swap files via external hard drive to do our own edits, color correction etc. Is there an easy way to convert mov files to avi files? I heard that the files are the same but the ? tags are different. So far we have had to render the mov files to get avi files and that is very time consuming.
 
No the fiels are not the same. The content may be but just changing a few tags is not goign to change an MOV to an AVI.

I assume on the PC you have to use AVI and your Mac has to use MOV files? You might check to see what file formats/codecs are supported and see if there's a common ground.
Another thought is whether you can exchange EDLs or XML files which have edit info. That way you could each have copies of the original and just send edit files back and forth.
