converting DVD to video file

There are a bunch of different softwars out there that can convert an authored DVD into mpeg or AVI or what not. I wonder if you guys know which one(s) are the best (meaning effective, stable and represents good value). Thanks.

How about free?

1. Find the .VOB files on your DVD.

2. Copy the .VOB files to your hard drive.

3. Change the file extension from .VOB to .MPG.

Usually this will give you playable files that can be edited.

Hope that helps! (And remember -- duplication of copyrighted material is a federal crime. Just FYI.)

Thanks! First of all the DVD is not copy righted... it's not a movie or anything like that. And your method works! Although initially there wasn't any audio until I put it on the timeline in Premiere.

Jimmy - I also have MPEG StreamClip... this seems to work too.

Thanks guys - saved me good 40 bucks!
