Converting client-supplied AVIs?

Hi all,

I have several (actually, a great many) AVI and WMV files that a client gave me for a project, and I was wondering if there is a recommended workflow for converting those to something I can use? I know FCP will import the files, but I really don't want to render every time I change an edit.

Details:

Final Cut Studio 2
Standard definition
(mostly) 29.97

Thanks so much! I'm pulling my hair out, and I'd really appreciate any advice you have to give.

Thanks for the reply...

No luck with the AVIs unfortunately, Compressor immediately kicks back a "failed" message. It was able to process the WMV files, but superimposed a "created with flip4mac trial etc etc..." message over the whole file.

Am I missing something, or does Compressor not have these codecs built in? If not, what do I need to buy to make this work?

Thanks again,
Paul

EDIT: used VLC to transcode the AVIs to mp4. Still no love from the WMVs...

I'd try mpeg streamclip...

you don't want mp4s to edit with.

As for the WMVs... I believe you'll need the full version of flip 4 mac.
