Converting AVI?

I'm trying to do a re-edit of a comedy that I felt suffered from bad editing. I'm basically trying to better the film by cutting out and re-arranging certain scenes. The trouble is that I only have the film as an .avi file, and I know that's a pretty lousy format for editing, especially on my 17" powerbook G4, with its measly 1GB of ram.

So I'm wondering if there's a way to compress/convert it to a format more suited to FCP 6. I could use compressor I guess, but I'm not sure which preset to use.

Any thoughts?

you can drop your avi file in the timeline, FPC will ask to render it before you can edit it, or you can export the timeline to a Quick Time compression NONE or ANIMATION and edit, but FPC will allways ask to render the timeline to QT DV, so i would go straght to it. just dont forget that everytime you translate to another codec you will loose quality, so try not to compress and recompress and recompress... hope it helps.
