Converting a 29.97 FCP project to 23.98

Hi everyone,

My DP shot beautiful footage on 35mm for a short film I directed/produced. The film was transferred to HD Cam Sr 23.98 tape with a simultaneous DVCam dub at 29.97.

My editor and I have been working with the DVcam footage in a 29.97 FCP timeline. We've picture locked and are now ready to digitize to HD for the final online. I plan on digitizing the HD files to see certain shots in full rez (to check certain speed effects, etc.) as well as to hand off uncompressed files to the Visual F/X guy.

However, my editor is suggesting that we import all the HDcam SR 23.98 footage at full rez and remake the cut by eye to match the 29.97 cut in DV. Basically an online at home. He would like to do this to avoid hitting costly snags doing an online at the post house. However, this will also be very costly - the storage will require over a terrabyte of hard drive space as well as the cost of digitizing. Also, the HD Cam SR files may be unwatchable on his FCP 6.0 MacBook Pro system. So then we may need to compress the media for our final format, which is doing more harm than good in my opinion.

Is there a more cost effective and efficient way to do this?

I suggested a reverse telecine for the 29.97 footage to 23.98 (taking into consideration that some frames will be off and need to be adjusted) . and then putting the footage into a 23.98 timeline, then doing the online at the post house and pull from the HD cam SR tape.

He told me this would be impossible as the DV cam footage was captured as one long output for the raw footage and was not done by takes on the A frame.

Does anyone know doing a reverse telecine is sound in this situation? Am I being naive?

Other solutions you know of?

Thanks!

What is the final deliverable? I'm all for the at home online recut at 23.98. But it depends what you plan to do with the project- go out to film, deliver an HDCAM SR master, go to SD, DVD. You could for example, transfer the tapes to ProRes high quality. It will playback very nicely on your system and even if it takes up a Terabyte, you can get a FW800 Terabyte drive now for around $600. You could either have the transfer house do it for you or get an AJA IO HD box, rent an HDCAM deck and do the transfers yourself- hopefully over a day or two. All in- this could cost under $5K.

JES Deinterlacer can do an inverse telecine of just about anything. It automatically detects cadence and cadence breaks, and can output to any quicktime format. It's pretty fast too, faster than real time. What I'd do is manage your project, and then batch process your trimmed media and reconnect it to a 23.98 sequence.
